Building pathways to independence through personal development and the power of work.

About us

Here at Goodwill of Greater Detroit, we build pathays to independence through personal development and the power of work. Founded in 1921, Goodwill Detroit has delivered best-in-class personal and workforce development programming to Metro Detroit returning citizens, youth, and residents who have been chronically under or unemployed, and those living with mental illness or intellectual/developmental disability. What many people don't know about us, is we have a long and successful history with social entrepreneurship outside of our fabled thrift stores. We operate 2 wholly-owned subsidiaries, Goodwill Integrated Solutions, a Tier 1 automotive assembly and kitting business, and Goodwill’s Green Works, providing asset recovery and industrial recycling services. We use these businesses to generate profits that may be reinvested in the mission of the organization, long-term employment opportunities for trainees with significant employment challenges, and transitional work experience for trainees needing time on-the-job before transitioning to competitive employment. There is a lot of good going on here! Employment is more than a paycheck - it's a resounding victory: for the individual, for their family, for their community. When jobs thrive, communities thrive. We know this because we've seen and celebrated it here for 100 years.

  • We are proud to share the success of our recent donation drive, made possible through a generous collaboration with the Detroit Police Department! Their dedication to serving the community has been instrumental in making this initiative a success. The sale of these items will go toward providing free programs and services to individuals with employment barriers, including those living with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Together, we collected over 4,000 pounds of gently used household items that will directly benefit individuals and families in need across metro-Detroit. A heartfelt thank you to the Detroit Police Department for their ongoing partnership and commitment to making a difference in our community!

Exciting news for metro Detroit! Goodwill of Greater Detroit is thrilled to announce the opening of two new thrift stores in 2024, marking our first expansion since 2016. The new Madison Heights retail location at 31010 John R Road will open this summer and the new Southfield store at 28901 Greenfield Road will open in the fall, furthering our mission of supporting individuals with employment barriers. These new retail locations will not only offer employment opportunities but also serve as hubs for donors to support the reuse of gently used items. Our Donated Goods Retail division, a nonprofit business generates jobs for members of our communities, including those with disabilities, and revenue to fund our free programs and support services. Ninety-two cents of every dollar spent at our retail stores going directly towards these initiatives, making a difference in the lives of thousands of metro Detroiters. In addition to our retail stores, we operate two other nonprofit businesses – Goodwill’s Green Works, and asset recycling operation and Goodwill Integrated Solutions, a Tier I supplier to the automotive and other industries – providing transitional and permanent employment as well as funding for our programs and services. The Madison Heights retail location will start accepting donations on Monday, April 15th, gearing up for its summer grand opening, while Southfield will begin accepting donations this summer ahead of its fall opening. Individuals interested in joining our team can visit www.goodwilldetroit.org for job listings at both new locations and our other stores. • Happy #GlobalRecyclingDay! ♻️ Today, and every day, we celebrate the women and men of the recycled materials industry - our #RecyclingHeroes - who inspire and propel us to a sustainable planet through commitment and innovation. Sustainability is deeply embedded within our organizational ethos here at Goodwill of Greater Detroit. Through our Goodwill Donated Goods & Retail stores, we champion the circular economy by diverting textiles, electronics and other goods from landfills each year. Additionally, our nonprofit Goodwill’s Green Works recycles industrial metals, appliances and EPS foam. These efforts not only reduce waste and protect our environment, but they also provide valuable job opportunities and skills training for members of our community, reinforcing our commitment to both environmental and social sustainability. Established by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Materials (ISRI) in 2018, Global Recycling Day serves as an annual reminder of the critical importance of recycling in preserving our planet for future generations. Now, more than ever, as we face mounting environmental challenges, Global Recycling Day underscores the urgent need for collective action and innovation to safeguard our environment and conserve precious resources.
